Key Takeaways

  • Google's own documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. You do not need special files, special markup or AI-specific text files.
  • Pages cited by AI Overviews are less tied to the top ten than they were. In Ahrefs' March 2026 study of about 863,000 keyword results and roughly 4 million cited URLs, about 38% of cited URLs also ranked in the top 10, against about 76% in the same team's July 2025 analysis.
  • In Ahrefs' study of 17 million citations, URLs cited by AI assistants averaged 1,064 days old, against 1,432 days for organic Google results. ChatGPT preferred newer pages. Google's AI Overviews and organic results cited older ones.
  • A 2024 research paper (KDD 2024) reports that content changes can increase visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, with results varying by domain.
  • The checklist below turns this into twelve edits. It is short on tricks on purpose.

The 12-point checklist

Access and eligibility

  1. Let the right bots in. Check robots.txt and any CDN or firewall rules. Google says to allow crawling both in robots.txt and at the host or CDN. A page that cannot be fetched cannot be cited.
  2. Make sure the page is indexed and can show a snippet. Do not use nosnippet or noindex on pages you want quoted.
  3. Keep key content in text. Do not hide answers inside images or scripts. Add images and video as support, with captions.

Write the answer

  1. Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first two to four sentences under each heading, then add context. An engine that wants to quote you needs a clean passage to lift.
  2. Use headings that are the questions people ask. Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, People Also Ask and Search Console queries.
  3. Add real numbers, named sources and dates. The GEO paper reports that content changes can lift visibility by up to 40%, and sourced numbers are the cheapest change to try. Link out to the primary source and say when you checked it.
  4. Use tables for comparisons and lists for steps. They are easy to extract and easy for a person to scan.
  5. Add a short FAQ for questions you cannot fit elsewhere. Make sure each answer stands alone.

Keep it true and current

  1. Update pages for real reasons and say so. The freshness study suggests assistants lean towards newer pages. Change the content when the facts change, and show the updated date. Do not change the date without changing the page.
  2. Make structured data match the visible page. Google says structured data should match the text on the page. Wrong or unrelated markup does more harm than none.
  3. Describe your brand the same way everywhere. Use the same name, one-line description and category on your site, your profiles and your docs, so a model that reads several places gets the same answer.

Measure

  1. Track it. AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. For assistants such as ChatGPT or Perplexity, keep a fixed list of 20 to 50 buyer questions, ask each on a schedule, and note whether you are mentioned or cited.

A note on llms.txt

Google says it does not need AI-specific text files to include a page in AI features. We still publish a plain llms.txt, a short index of our pages, because some tools and agents read it. Treat it as a courtesy, not as a ranking lever, and do not spend more time on it than on the pages themselves.

Where to start

If you have an hour, do items 4 and 5 on your ten most important pages. If you have a day, add 6, 7 and 12. For the deeper picture, read our GEO playbook and the zero-click marketing playbook. MITPO's competitor research can show you which questions your rivals already answer well.

FAQ

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank pages in a list of results. AEO aims to be the source an engine quotes or cites when it writes an answer. The work overlaps heavily, and Google says optimizing for AI features is still SEO.

Do I need schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?

Google says no special schema is needed. Use structured data where it fits your content, and make sure it matches what is visible on the page.

Is it still worth ranking in the top 10?

Yes. Ahrefs found the overlap between AI Overview citations and the top 10 has fallen, but still about 38% of cited URLs ranked there, and ranking pages still earn the click.

How do I get my brand cited or mentioned by ChatGPT?

There is no switch for it. Make sure your pages can be crawled and are not blocked, answer the question in the first sentences under each heading, back claims with named sources, and keep important pages current. In Ahrefs' 17-million-citation study, ChatGPT was the assistant most likely to cite newer pages. Then check by asking your fixed list of buyer questions on a schedule and recording whether you appear.

How do I know if an AI assistant cites me?

There is no single dashboard. Use Search Console for Google, and a fixed question list for the rest. Record the answers monthly.

How often should I update pages?

When something changes. A quarterly check on your most important pages is a reasonable habit, and every update should add or correct something real.
